BLAIR'S DVD WATCH: Heart's Classic First Album Is Born Again on DVD (and CD)

Dreamboat cover

Heart: Dreamboat Annie Live
(Shout! Factory)

This whole business of bands playing legendary albums in their entirety is an interesting trend. I guess it really started with a soon-to-be classic 28 years ago, when The Who would regularly perform their then-new Tommy at many shows. My recollection is that Pink Floyd played most, if not all, of Dark Side of the Moon live and in order on their 1972 "Eclipse" and '73 "Dark Side..." tours, both of which I saw and was blown away by; they definitely did it for The Wall a few years later. More recently, former Floyd member Roger Waters has taken to pleasing crowds at his shows by performing the entire album. Two years ago Patti Smith released a live CD of her current band (which isn't much different than her original band) playing her 1975 debut album, Horses, in order, in its entirety. The performances were pretty true to the original album, which is either a good thing or a bad thing, depending on how you look at it. I mean, performing something essentially the same as you did 30 years earlier doesn't exactly show growth as an artist. (Ironic, since Patti has grown tremendously since then). But I suppose it's nice for audiences who grew up on certain classics to be able to hear every song on an album-even the less than thrilling tunes!-in concentrated form. (It certainly takes away the element of surprise for the concertgoer, however, not to mention diminishing the way a song's appearance in a concert between other newer and perhaps older songs changes the context and feeling of the classic tunes.)

Another Piece of My Heart

It's shocking that it has taken until now for Ann Wilson, the powerhouse lead singer of Heart, to release her first solo album (Hope & Glory, out September 11). One of the major voices in rock since Heart's founding three decades ago, Wilson is peerless in tearing through Zeppelin-influenced hard rock with memorable tunes, like "Barracuda" and "Crazy On You."

But on Hope & Glory, the elder Wilson sister emerges as a thoughtful soloist with a political agenda. The collection of mostly covers revisits hallowed songs by the likes of John Lennon and Neil Young, sung with such unexpected partners as Rufus Wainwright, kd lang and Alison Krause. Wilson tones down her typically thundering vocals and shuns the swagger of vintage Heart in favor of moody production, blues and even bluegrass.

Though the war in Iraq clearly influenced this socially-conscious album, it's not all doom and gloom. Along with apocalyptic tunes like Dylan's "A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall," the singer includes the Youngbloods' "Get Together," which suggests there is a place for hope in even the most difficult times. The one original on the album, "Little Problems, Little Lies," is deceptive in its beauty. A haunting lullaby, it paints an astoundingly vivid picture of a wounded soldier's last moments, and Wilson, her voice tender yet confident, pulls it off gracefully.

Heart singer mines her heart on solo album - upi.com

 [ 10/10/2007 ]
SEATTLE, Oct. 9 (UPI) - Seattle rocker Ann Wilson said the desire to record "songs of social consciousness" inspired her first solo album. "Hope & Glory" features just one new song, "Little Problems, Little Lies," and 11 of the Heart front woman's favorites from Bob Dylan, Led Zeppelin, Neil Young, the Animals, Pink Floyd and others. All, she said, share a common theme. "The amount of bombardment we get from reality every day is pretty terrifying and stressful, and very negative," Wilson said. "These songs talk about that but also supply some kind of option. They're poetic about how to deal with stress and the ideas that are coming down on us like rain. "Hopefully this is something people can take with them and use in their lives to listen to and maybe be inspired by." "Hope & Glory" features collaborations with Elton John, Gretchen Wilson, k.d. lang and Wilson's sister and Heart partner Nancy Wilson, among others.

Hope & Glory review 3 out of 4 stars

 [ 9/10/2007 ]

It's hard to believe that Heart's powerhouse lead vocalist Ann Wilson never got around to recording a solo album, yet she's not exactly going it alone on this initial venture out.

The dark-haired roaring rocker, who together with sister Nancy propelled Heart to multi-platinum fame in the 1970s and early '80s, has gathered some big names to help her out on "Hope & Glory," her first solo release.

It's primarily a "covers," album designed to showcase Wilson's voice, and she's infused the set with plenty of subliminal and not-so-subliminal social commentary through her choice of material..... (click MORE)

Ann Wilson on Rockline by Bob Coburn

 [ 9/7/2007 ]

So, your friend says, " I'm going to tell you a secret, but you can't tell anyone about it for two and a half months." No problem, huh? Then a bombshell gets dropped on you and it takes all your will power to hold it in that long. Such is the case with the brand new CD "Hope and Glory" by Ann Wilson of Heart, in stores and on-line on 9-11. We at ROCKLINE got an advance copy months ago and swore not to play it anywhere in public. So quite often, we finish a show and just sit in our studio and listen to it together. That would be AFTER we are finished for the night. The first thing that strikes you is what an unbelievable voice Ann still possesses and then the actual song....(click more for rest of story)

Ann Wilson Week: Little Problems, Little Lies

************

antiMusic reports: Heart frontwoman Ann Wilson is releasing her very first solo album, Hope and Glory, next week. The album not only showcases Ann's amazing talent but she also got a little help from her friends including Elton John, Gretchen Wilson, Alison Krauss, Rufus Wainwright, and of course her sister Nancy. This week we get a little preview with Ann telling us a little bit about a few of the tracks on the CD. Here is Ann with today's song: Little Problems, Little Lies

We decided to write from the very first day, but it took me a really long time to figure out who I was and what my lyrics could be inside this album. But then I thought why don't I be a soldier in Iraq lying down to die, bewildered, and summing things up. I wanted to keep it simple and use the language someone would use at a time like that.

When we first started working on the album, some people were like "Do we dare take some sort of global, political stand?" Because generally there's music and there's this other thing way over there - politics. But it's become so pervasive, it's all fused together, now so I don't think anyone has to worry. I believe this is good music for people to hear, to help to contemplate our world now. Ann Wilson Week: Isolation

antiMusic reports: Heart frontwoman Ann Wilson is releasing her very first solo album, Hope and Glory, next week. Here is Ann with today's song: Isolation

For me this brilliant John Lennon song was always a very personal, very human response to being messed with - to being totally kicked around. It's about what it feels like to be on "the human trampoline," as Paul Simon would say.

Because my own response to being treated that way is always to get very isolated, this song means a lot to me. Recording "Isolation" meant even more because I cut that vocal and that track only a few days after our mother passed away. That's actually the first take. We didn't add much of anything. We didn't have to. Preview a couple tracks off the CD, grab tour dates and more right here! http://www.myspace.com/officialannwilson

Review by Pulse (Chatanooga paper)

 [ 9/5/2007 ]

by John M. James
September 05, 2007

Two"old friends" are rising back into the aural zeitgeist next week. Heart vocalist Ann Wilson returns with Hope & Glory, her debut solo album showcasing a new, poignant, serious-minded original, and 11 powerfully resonating cover selections. More somber and earthy than political or preachy, the themes adrift in Neil Young's "War of Man," Bob Dylan's "A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall," and Jesse Colin Young's "Darkness, Darkness" are well stirred by these troubled times, and well, mighty comforting here in the foxhole. More clouds and thunder come in a spooky-cool run at Pink Floyd's "Goodbye Blue Sky," a down-home front-porch hootenanny of Creedence Clearwater Revival's "Bad Moon Rising" with guest Gretchen Wilson, and a call to "Get Together" with The Youngbloods' Summer of Love hit.

Other guests include a duet with Elton John on his own "Where to Now Saint Peter," and k.d. lang riding shotgun on the road to Lucinda Williams' "Jackson." Closing out the Zoe Records release, Wilson's new song, "Little Problems, Little Lies," was written from the imagined perspective of an American soldier in Iraq, "a bleedin' in a bombed-out SUV," and succeeds where 90 percent of pop music today fails, asking the listener to slow down a little, breathe deep, and listen to the words...

My love of Led Zeppelin is very much a matter of public record. Have I heard from the guys yet? No, and as Helen Mirren said when she was asked about the Queen seeing The Queen, I don't think we'll ever really know what they think of this. If you're going to re-record a Zeppelin song, I think you have to reinvent it and that's where Ben Mink just shone. Ben said, "Why don't we just start you out like Yma Sumac and take the song way, way North African?" Our version starts a little like a little dot on the horizon, but by the time it's done you've been overrun by all the barbarians.

Heart rocks out Fair!

 [ 9/5/2007 ]

LANCASTER - Why do some bands endure and others fade away? Why do people still care?

On Tuesday night at the Antelope Valley Fair and Alfalfa Festival, rock band Heart proved they could remain relevant more than 30 years after they got their start as a bar band - and that their audience still cares.

On the other hand, relative newcomers The All-American Rejects demonstrated one night later that rock's glory isn't the sole domain of its elder statesmen or women.
