Postcards From the Road

The Towel Dance

I've long been a not so secret admirer of the rain ever since we moved to Seattle from the California desert.

To me it's like a beautiful baptism of cleansing sights and sounds that can turn any old dusty litterbug place into lovely melting reflecting living paintings. Rain is quite symphonic from its single drop drop intimacy to its majestic tidal storm strength.

I'm a water baby, Pisces by the stars. So when it comes to communing with water in any way, I'm in.

I have developed a tradition of the doing the Towel Dance whenever it's time to get hand washing done in a hotel.

Often there's no dry cleaning or laundry service available when you're on the bus most nights and only an occasional hotel.

So here's what you do:

Count up your dirty items and order the same number of extra towels-one extra per item. It's wise to tell housekeeping you are doing hand wash so they don't think you are trying to trick them and take all the towels. And I wouldn't mention the part about doing the towel dance either...

In the tub or sink add clothes, cold water plus hotel shampoo and or bath gel.

Drain rince press and twist out most water.

Lay out a bath towel for each item of clothes and fold the towel up and over till it's a square mound.

Now for the dance! Put on some shoes and slowly dance/walk the length of the towel a few times over.

Hang dry everything in a closet or hang from tall lamp shades. Balconies are excellent but super rare.

Now it's a good time to wash the bottoms of your flip flops and let them dry overnight too.

If there is something that needs an extra quick dry you can place the hairdryer in the upside down Kleenex holder and aim it. Just leave it on high but not directly on fabric which will cause the hairdryer to short out. Obviously the hairdryer should be well away from any accumulated water.

Everything should be dry the next day for lobby call and you not only feel fresher but you also had a nice time staying out of trouble and playing with the water in your room!
