Heart Fits Rarities Into Opening Night Of Summer Tour (Jambase Review)

On July 9, Heart kicked off their highly anticipated “Love Alive” tour with a show at the Hollywood Casino Amphitheatre in Maryland Heights, Missouri. Supported by Sheryl Crow and Lucie Silvas, the performance marked the first time the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame act has performed on the road in three years (though Ann and Nancy Wilson did briefly reunite during a charity show in New York City back in March).
Heart held nothing back in starting their performance, busting out “Rockin’ Heaven Down,” off 1980’s Bébé le Strange, live for the first time since 1982. By way of Dreamboat Annie‘s “Magic Man,” the group then performed the tour’s namesake, “Love Alive,” off 1977’s Little Queen and 1978 title track “Dog & Butterfly.” To round out the opening sequence, the group performed their first of a series of covers throughout the night: Marvin Gaye’s smash hit “Heard It Through The Grapevine.”
Another Dog & Butterfly song, “Straight On,” came ahead of two more widely appreciated covers. Simon & Garfunkel’s “The Boxer” preceded Pink Floyd’s “Comfortably Numb,” ahead of original “Back To Avalon,” marking the 1993 tune’s first live play since 2010. “These Dreams,” off the band’s 1985 self-titled release, led into Yes’ 1971 cut “Your Move.” From there, the band shifted to Ann Wilson’s solo catalog, offering up the group’s debut of “Anguish.” To close out the set, Heart performed “Mistral Wind” and classic “Crazy On You.”
To close out the show in full, Heart first offered a blistering take on Led Zeppelin’s “The Battle of Evermore,” a track off 1971’s Led Zeppelin IV. By way of fan-favorite “Barracuda,” the group closed the night in full with two final covers: Toronto’s “What About Love” and I-Ten’s “Alone.”
